Denver international studies scholar Erica Chenoweth and U.S. State Department strategist Maria Stephan met by chance at a workshop a few years ago. They ended up collaborating on a book about civil resistance that earned them the 2013 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order. Recently, they explained how they learned that nonviolence works better than violence to bring about change.
