In this 2010 TED talk, musician Derek Sivers uses video footage of a man dancing alone at a concert to illuminate the importance and power of the first follower. He argues that leadership can be over-glorified and that followership may actually be the most important part of starting a movement.

Spectrum of Allies : Visit Swarthmore College’s Global Nonviolent Action Database and choose a campaign case. Next, join the discussion forum and list 3-5 actors who were involved in that campaign.

• Were they supporters? Opponents? Unaffected actors?

Now, place these actors along the Spectrum of Allies according to where you think their allegiance was at the end of the campaign.

• Did any of the actors shift along the spectrum as a result of the campaign? If so, which actors? Why do you think those actors shifted?
