Course Agenda

Chapter 1: Foundations of Election Violence

We'll evaluate the conceptual foundations of the term election violence by questioning what it can look like in different contexts. Some of the case studies include Kenya's 2017 elections and Mexico's 2018 elections. Finally, we'll investigate how international engagement in elections has changed over time and examine common prevention approaches that have emerged. (1 hour, 30 min)

Chapter 2: Conflict Analysis and Early Warning: Root Causes and Risk Assessment

We'll introduce macro and micro methods of analyzing conflict-driven electoral violence while highlighting the Electoral Risk Management Tool as a framework to detect early warning signs of electoral violence. (2 hours)

Chapter 3: Early Prevention

We'll examine the role of election administration in reducing the risk of election violence. Additionally, we'll frame the role that security forces play in preventing election violence by drawing upon field research from Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger, and Nigeria. (2 hours)

Chapter 4: Violence Mitigation and Crisis Response

We'll apply tools to prevent violence, such as election observation, to a case study of the 2018 Mexico elections. Then, we'll analyze the need to expand women's role in elections by listening to two featured podcasts. (3 hours)

Chapter 5: Measuring Effectiveness and Evaluating Impact

We'll investigate the importance of monitoring and evaluation for election projects. We'll reflect on methods to measure election success. Finally, you will go back in time and analyze the propensity for violence in the run-up to Indonesia’s 2019 general elections  (1 Hour)

Chapter 6: Conclusion

You'll reflect on what you've learned throughout the course and share your feedback with us. You will also take the final exam in order to receive your certificate for successful completion of the course. (1 Hour)
